Tribute to Wayne Lewis of Atlantic Starr – Passed Away at Age 68

Remembering Wayne Lewis: A Personal Tribute from Joel Crafton (aka Black Pinoy)

It is with deep sadness that I share the news of the passing of Wayne Lewis, a founding member of the legendary R&B group Atlantic Starr. Wayne passed away at the age of 68, leaving behind a powerful legacy of timeless music and unforgettable moments that have touched millions around the world.

My name is Joel Crafton, also known in the music world as Black Pinoy, a Music producer, writer, arranger, artist, and author. I’ve had the blessing of working behind the scenes at powerhouse labels like Atlantic, Elektra, ATCO, and WEA, promoting hit records that helped define generations—from Anita Baker to Tracy Chapman, Phil Collins, Keith Sweat, Mötley Crüe, Nikki Sixx, Eric Clapton, and many more. I worked directly with general managers, crossing departments to ensure these artists had the exposure and momentum to break boundaries.

Before that, I was signed to Panoramic Records with major distribution under EMI, standing alongside icons such as Ray, Goodman & Brown and Black Ivory. The relationships I’ve built and the experiences I’ve lived through are beyond what money or fame could ever provide.

Among those treasured relationships, Wayne and David Lewis of Atlantic Starr held a special place in my heart. We go back over 40 years—growing up in the same city, rehearsing in the same music rooms, and sitting side by side at the piano, writing and arranging music that would soon echo across the world. It wasn’t just collaboration; it was brotherhood. I practically lived at their house during our early years, sharing meals with their family, deep conversations, laughter, and dreams of the future.

I’ll never forget the night of Atlantic Starr’s debut at Madison Square Garden, where they shared the stage with Chaka Khan. Wayne needed a piano for the performance, and I was proud to lend him mine—no questions asked. That was our bond: one rooted in trust, respect, and a deep, unshakable love for the art of music.

Jonathan Lewis, Wayne and David’s brother and bandmate, remains a dear friend. He even visited me in the studio while I was preparing for a tour in Hong Kong and nearly joined me on the road before scheduling interfered.

Atlantic Starr, with the Lewis brothers at its core, delivered timeless classics that defined an era of romance, soul, and elegance in music. The world will remember Wayne and David through unforgettable hits like:

                                          Jonathan Lewis and
Joel Crafton aka Black Pinoy

  • “Always”

  • “Secret Lovers”

  • “Am I Dreaming”

  • “Touch a Four Leaf Clover”

  • “Send for Me”

  • “Circles”

  • “Masterpiece”

Wayne’s voice and keyboard work, alongside David’s soulful vocals and guitar—particularly as the lead voice on “Secret Lovers”—were more than instruments. They were conduits of love, unity, and soul. Their music became the soundtrack for weddings, first dances, reconciliations, and cherished memories around the globe.

As I reflect on Wayne’s passing, I am reminded of the fragile yet beautiful thread that connects all of us in this industry. I’ve been publicly recognized by legends like Bobby Caldwell for my behind-the-scenes work, and it is humbling to have been part of a movement that shaped lives. Today, I continue that legacy as a recording artist and producer. But right now, my heart is heavy with remembrance and reverence.

The world has lost a true musical spirit, but Wayne Lewis will never be forgotten. His memory lives in every note, every lyric, and every person who ever felt something listening to his music.

To Wayne’s family, friends, fans, and the members of Atlantic Starr—thank you for allowing me to be part of this incredible journey. Wayne, you may be gone from this earth, but you live on in the millions of hearts you touched.

Rest well, brother. You will always be loved.
